MADHU CHURCH

Madhu Church, or Our Lady of Madhu, is a Roman Catholic Shrine located on the north western side of Sri Lanka, approximately 210 kilometres north from the capital Colombo.
It is said that in the 17th century,
when the Dutch were invading Sri Lanka, a group of 20 Catholic families escaped to the north from Mantai to Madhu with a statue of the Virgin Mary where they felt they would be safe.
At about the same time hundreds of Catholics migrated from the Jaffna peninsula to the Wanni forests and the two communities met in Madhu where they built a shrine to protect the statue of the Virgin Mary.
